Teen pleads guilty to DUI in crash death Jan 14, 2010
The court made very sure 18-year-old Kevin Schuh knew exactly what he was doing when he entered a guilty plea Monday to the charges that his drunken driving cost Hersey High School sophomore Monika Skrzypkowski her life. The Mount Prospect man entered a blind plea, meaning he pleaded guilty without benefit of a sentencing agreement, effectively throwing himself on the mercy of the court. However, his plea doesn't guarantee leniency. Cook County Circuit Court Judge John Scotillo reiterated to Schuh that neither prosecutors nor the court had agreed upon a sentence. Drunk Driving – A Week Into 2010 and Over 200 Deaths Jan 11, 2010
Over 10,000 people a year die in alcohol-related accidents each year. The problem of drunk driving, though, is much more widespread. More than 500,000 accidents involving alcohol (about one every two minutes) occur each year. In 2006, 1.46 million drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics. And those are just the people who got caught. Here’s the really mind-blowing number: A 2002 survey estimated that Americans engaged in more than 159 million alcohol-impaired driving trips—that’s one impaired journey for every two Americans! In reality, only 2.3% of Americans reported driving while impaired, but the frequency of those decisions is absolutely terrifying! And who knows how many respondents didn’t fully understand what impairment really is? Stats courtesy of MADD (Every 15 Minutes News & Media)

"There isn't a guy in this locker room who isn't playing for his memory," reliever Jason Bulger said of Nick Adenhart, the 22-year-old Angels pitcher and Washington County native who was killed with two friends when their car was broadsided by an alleged drunk driver near Angel Stadium on April 9, four days into the season.

After the Adenhart Tragedy, an Angels Miracle Oct 8, 2009
As the Los Angeles Angels head into the American League playoffs, they will be remembering a lost teammate: pitcher Nick Adenhart, 22, who died on April 9, only four days into the season, after pitching six scoreless innings in his season debut. He and two friends were killed after their car was hit by a van that ran a red light. The team paid tribute to Adenhart when they clinched their division championship last week. But the team was also aware of another, quieter triumph, perhaps a miracle. Indeed, Jon Wilhite, the fourth person in Adenhart's car, shouldn't be alive. The violent collision ripped his skull from his spine, resulting in what doctors call internal decapitation. It is almost always fatal. When Wilhite arrived at the hospital after the savage accident, X-rays and a CAT scan showed that his head was held in place only by muscles and skin. But gentle work by paramedics gave a gifted surgeon the chance to literally screw Wilhite's head back on his body. Remembering Nick Adenhart
